Why wouldn’t my North American Nintendo 3DS charger work in Chile?

I visited Chile recently and I used a universal power adapter to plug in all of my North American things. It all worked fine except for my Nintendo 3DS. I plugged in my computer, some rechargeable AA batteries, some rechargeable camera batteries, and an electric razor, all with no problems. My 3DS never would respond to any attempts at charging it with that adapter. Any idea what I need to do for future trips? The plane ride was very long and boring without my Ocarina Of Time. Many thanks in advance.

By ‘universal power adapter’ do you mean a step-down transformer to convert Chile’s 220V to US 110V or just an outlet adapter to allow you to plug your US things in to a Chilean outlet? If the former then there shouldn’t have been any problem. If the latter then (unless the US chargers are 100-240V universal like the rest of the world – I think they’re 110V only) the voltages are just incompatible. You might have damaged the charger as well.
