About Electric Shavers

The Electric Shaver was invented and patented in 1923 by Jacob Schick who then, in 1928, sold the idea to the American Chain and Cable Company.

Using an electric shaver has many benefits, the major ones being:-

1.  It is a “dry” shaving method and therfore does not need the use of water or foam (or other lubrication).

2.  They are a very safe alternative to the original cut-throat blades used for wet shaving.

3.  They cause much less instances of ingrowing hairs than when using straight or safety wet razors

Modern electric razors work by using a rotating or blade beneath a steel mesh.  When placed on the skin, hair passed through the mesh and the rotating blades lift and then cur the hair.  Because the hair is lifted and then cut, it often takes a a few days for the skin to get used to this type of shaving (over wet shaving where the hair is simply cut).

The downside of using an electric shaver over a wet razor is when long hair needs to be shaved.  Hair that is too long does not fit through the mesh correctly and the blades end up doing more pulling than cutting.  The solution to this is that most electric shavers now come with an attached trimming blade that is used to shorten the hair before actual shaving takes places.

With both battery, wind-up and mains powered options available – and water proof shavers for use directly in the shower – the electrc shaver is a great way for both men and women to keep themesleves hair free.

So, what should you look for when purchasing and electric shaver.  Well, the following points should be looked at…

a. The Materials – is the shaver made from sturdy materials that will last?

b. The Architecture – does the design of the shaver (and trimmer) meet what you need for the areas you want shaving?

c. Motor speed – higher is better.

d. Head – multiple heads are usually better.

e. Foils – the foils must be of high quality

f. Brand – big brands such as Gillette and Braun usually work better.

g. Price – there is no need to spend too much as there are plenty of quality models at reasonable prices.
